£700 million in government funding has been announced to develop up to ten major industrial and commercial sites across the UK.
The programme is known as the Strategic Sites Accelerator – the aim is to provide government assistance to tackle the key barriers which are holding back 'high potential' sites. This could include access to finance, grid connections or planning constraints among others.
Sites will be identified in conjunction with mayors and local leaders and the programme aims to crowd in up to £2 billion in private investment over time providing tens of thousands of jobs.
Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey said:
'Local leaders know their communities best. Only by trusting them with real power and resources will we see change.'
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said:
'This programme will get the ball rolling for up to 10 of the UK's most important potential sites, attract billions in investment, unlock tens of thousands of good-quality jobs in the years ahead, and bring good growth to every postcode.'
