Ahead of the Budget on 28 October 2026, plans for 'a distinctly British approach to AI' have been released by the government. The announcements focussed on investment to unlock the opportunities offered by AI whilst minimising the inherent risks of AI and other threats.
Measures include additional funding for the Sovereign AI Fund which will allow investment in promising UK AI companies. Central to the announcements is the government's aim of 'growth in every postcode'; Mayoral Strategic Authorities will be given funding to kickstart local AI partnerships.
The proposals recognised importance of managing the risks of AI whilst stimulating growth and included a package to strengthen Britain's ability to manage threats. These include an investment in an AI Security Institute for AI research and testing but also investments in harnessing AI to protect against biological threats and cyber attacks.
Business groups have been responding to the proposals. Jordan Cummins, CBI UK Competitiveness Director, said:
'The Chancellor is right to put security, resilience and trust at the heart of the UK's approach to AI. Firms will adopt AI faster and at greater scale when they are confident that it is safe, secure and working in the interests of their workforce.'
