This week marks the release of a number of Jobs Plans aimed to give young people a route into some of Britain's main growth industries and tackle the issue of nearly 1 million young people not being in employment, education or training.

Jobs Plans for the Professional and Business Services, Construction and Digital and Technology sectors have already been released with Defence expected later this week.

Key figures include:

  • 22,400 new under-25 apprenticeships a year in businesses such as accountancy, legal services, and consultancy alongside a 20% increase in work experience opportunities
  • 40,000 new construction placements a year
  • 10,000 new work experience placements in the digital and technology sector combined with access for all secondary schools to the government programme TechFirst which provides workshops, skills session, tech clubs and a digital learning platform

The Defence Jobs Plan, which should be delivered later this week, is expected to include an increase in the number of people supported through apprenticeship programmes in the defence sector to at least 14,000 annually by 2035 and a 25% increase in work experience and pathways for young people not in education, employment or training.

Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said:

'It's encouraging to see even more industries backing young people with new opportunities to gain the skills, training and experience needed to succeed in the growing sectors of our economy.'
